L'histoire d'Essaouira date du 7e siècle av. J.-C. quand les Phéniciens ont découvert cet endroit. À la fin du 15e siècle, les Portuguais s'y sont installés pour en faire une base militaire et commerciale. La majorité de ce qui reste aujourd'hui, est l'oeuvre de l'architecte français Théodore Cornut, prisionnier du sultan Sidi Mohammed bin Abdallah en 1765.

The story of Essaouira starts in the 7th century BC, when Pheniciens discovered this place. At the end of the 15th century, Portuguese were here and the city was a military and commercial base. Most of what you see here is from the french architect named Theodore Cornut. He had to do his plans when he was a prisonner of the sultan Mohammed bin Abdallah in 1765.
